Jaume Amigó

Jaume Amigó's journeys inform his work with an aesthetic acquired during long stays in places such as Morocco or Mallorca.  The frequent trips to Asia that in recent years Amigó has taken (fourteen trips only to Japan) have deeply influenced the work of this multi-talented artist, who moves with equal ease in painting as in sculpture and printmaking, and, as his next exhibition manifests, also in the Japanese technique of raku, a type of ceramic whose properties offer a wide field for experimentation.  Amigó began working in raku during one of his sojourns in Japan and the result of his initial efforts was so satisfactory that uopon his return to Spain he built a ceramic kiln in his studio, where he has continued to experiment, fascinated by the results that this age-old process offers.  The work that was shown at the gallery last summer conisists of pieces created in Japan complemented by others made in his studio in La Noguera.

The work of Jaume Amigó is characterized by a refinement of a pictorial language and the distillation of a personal iconography, distinguished by simple forms that recall elements of Nature or day to day untensils.  He works principally with paper, his preferred medium for the organic qualities it embodies (it has a will, memory and reacts to environmental changes much like a living being).

Amigó has enjoyed a distinguished exhibition record with shows in galleries both in Spain and abroad.  Exhibitions of his work were held at Michael Dunev Art Projects in the years 2000, 2004, and 2008. Amigó's activities this past year include a six month artist-in-residence programme at La Ferme Asile, in Sion, Switzerland, followed by an exhibition at the Ferme's galleries and a one-person show of recent work in Amsterdam. Most recently he has been involved in the set design for a dance and theatre company in Switzerland.
